Dear Mass Mudders, Inc.:

The Gloucester Police D.A.R.E. Program Inc. would like very much to be

considered to be the recipient of this years Pig Roast Fund Raiser.  I feel that

the D.A.R.E. Program is worthy of your thoughtful fund raiser as we typify

the very meaning of the intent of the fund.

The D.A.R.E. Program started in 1983 in a few schools in Los Angelas,

California. It is now in eighty percent of our school districts in the United States

Reaching twenty-six million young people in America each year.

The  D.A.R.E. Program is also being conducted in fifty-five other countries

With great success. In addition to promoting the need to make the right decisions

About avoiding illegal drugs, D.A.R.E. helps build trusting, secure relationships

among our young people with there parents, teachers, law enforcement officers

and other members of the community who are interested in maintaining the well

being of our children and keeping them safe by preventing drug use in their

communities.

There are currently two D.A.R.E. Officers in Gloucester at the present

time, myself, Officer Wellesley Eastman, and Officer David Adams are life long

residents of this community and we are committed to serving the public. It is

our goal and assignment to teach the D.A.R.E Program to young people from the

kindergarten to the high school levels. We also have a wonderful D.A.R.E.

summer camp for young people of all ages, which also involves other communities.

The importance of reaching out to our young people throughout the year

Cannot be overstated. We are needed especially in the summer months when

school is out, parents are working due to economic necessity, and children are

left with very few options for adult direction and guidance. The summer camp

has proven to be a lifesaver for the members of our community. It provides

friendship and fellowship, care and guidance, as well as a lot of safe, enjoyable

fun for them.

Due to the recent budget cuts in federal and national funding, the D.A.R.E.

Program is now in desperate financial crisis. We are in dire need of funding for

next years program. I have spoken with many concerned parents and members

of the community who are voicing there concerns about the possibility of not

having a D.A.R.E Program next year in Gloucester.

The new D.A.R.E. Program has been in operation long enough to have proven

Its value and worth. As it approaches its twentieth year of existence, adults

who participated in the program as children and teenagers have written

testimonials supporting the D.A.R.E. Program and crediting its programs,

lectures and counselors as having literally been instrumental in saving their

lives by providing support, guidance and direction to them regarding the need

to avoid illegal, dangerous drugs.

D.A.R.E. Officers attend training conferences and many classes to keep up

to date on the latest information. They study what teaching methods prove

to get the best positive results to keep our children safe. D.A.R.E. Officers

are constantly updating their knowledge of the dangerous drugs that are

being targeted for young people by unscrupulous drug dealers.

Illegal drugs attack everything that is best about our Country. They rob

all Amricans, young and old, of there self respect, their dignity, their health,

and ultimately their lives. The D.A.R.E. Program has proven to be a huge

success in Gloucester.  I know, as a D.A.R.E. Officer since the programs

inception in our community, that the program has made Gloucester a safer,

healthier place for our children to live in.

I feel that illegal drugs are still a serious, viable problem in this

Country, and now is not the time to become complacent or lax about the protection

of young people. It is of the utmost importance that the members of this

community strive together to keep the D.A.R.E.  Program going in Gloucester.

Your fund raiser is an example of the commitment and caring of all

members of the Mass Mudders, Inc., and we are very grateful for the opportunity

To involve you in providing the safe care and protection that we all need

To give the young people of Gloucester. If chosen, we would be honored to

receive the generous donation of your fund raiser.  I sincerely thank you for

Considering our submission proposal, and thank you for your interest.

                                                               Happy Mudding!
